Will the U.S. Strike Iran—or Strike a Deal?
Iranians want a deal on democracy, not a deal on nuclear weapons. We should too.
The United States has been building up its military presence around Iran in recent days. Experts I trust say that plans are being drawn up for possible military action against Iran—though that does not mean this scenario will ultimately play out.
In the video below, I walk through several possible ways the U.S.–Iran standoff could unfold, and the impact each could have on anti-regime protests inside Iran. I worry that either a U.S. military strike or a deal struck with the country’s theocratic regime could ultimately harm this democratic movement.

Thank you for your steadfast voice of reason and compassion. It is really hard to hold the nightmare reality emerging on this planet. It is difficult to be from the west (Canada) and feel daily that none of us are doing all we can - in Ukraine, Georgia, Iran, others - to support people willing to die for the rule of law and democracy. I hope, as PM Carney suggested, that the middle powers will find their voice and a strong arm, to protect and see through to victory the hopes of these peoples. Some of us have young grandkids - one day they will be asking us tough questions, as we did of our parents re WWll.
Lets hope for peace in these trying times.
