The Implications of Trump's Bombing of Iran for Other US National Security Interests
Few countries in the world supported our preemptive strike against Iran. That's damaging to America's reputation in the world. Maybe Trump does not care. I do.
I don't usually post my television appearance here on Substack, but this one gave me the chance to discuss in some detail how Trump’s bombing of Iran might impact other American national interests around the world. In the short term, Putin cannot be pleased, as his ally, Iran, is now weaker than it has ever been before. At the same time, Trump’s decision to launch a preemptive military strike, without the support of NATO allies or the UN Security Council, allows Putin to say that he did the same in Ukraine. This is just what great powers do, so the argument goes. Xi also loses in the short term because the Islamic Republic of Iran is a close partner. But Xi also benefits from looking like the leader who supports sovereignty, international law, and global order when the U.S. does not. Take a look here.
The author clearly questions President Trump’s recent nuclear strike action against Iran, repeatedly emphasizing the importance of U.S. military allies. He also raises concerns about whether such an action was authorized by Congress in advance. In comparison, he refers to the war precedents set by Presidents Bush and Obama. At the same time, the author expresses his worries about the potential international consequences of this action.
