Since his comments disparaging NATO allies as a presidential candidate in 2016, Trump has learned nothing about how NATO works and why NATO serves U.S. security interests.
Trump's main issue is not in what he does or doesn't understand. It's that all his actions and pronouncements are entirely disconnected from any system of values appropriate to a political society rather than a perpetually self-eating mob.
Ditto what other commenters here have said---I too believe that the former president does, indeed, understand (although he unlikely knows the history). But he doesn't care about anything other than how he'll financially benefit from allying himself with Putin and his supporters.
Trump and his ilk (notably House Speaker Johnson today) are so wrapped up in their Heritage Foundation, Federalist Society, Fox News, Epoch Times, Breitbart, Rumble echo chamber that they and their fellow conservatives (perhaps a third of American voters?!) do not see the forest for the trees. It's like Robespierre and his Reign of Terror, or Hitler and his Final Solution. Cults big or small need an intervention. And it's up to thought leaders like Mike McFaul and the millions of others who do see the forest for the trees to splash a tidal wave of cold water on those who are blinded so they know, before they vote or speak, what evil and destruction to our way of life they're courting.

You can’t argue with Trump on NATO and your article is too long for him to read. Defend NATO , get aid to Ukraine funded, re-elect Biden…
Trump DOES understand.
He is allied with Putin’s interests.
Thank you for strengthening my appreciation for NATO
Totally agree. Craig Unger's book Kompromat and other studies have detailed Trump's indebtedness to Putin and his oligarchs.
ill check out
