Historically Americans have held the view that European wars should not involve the United States. That line of reasoning proved to be a fallacy, as we entered World War One and the Second World War.

World War Two may not have ended in victory for the allies without the United States. The United States became the leader of the Free World.

However, both wars come with a cautionary tale. Aggression against democratic nations requires treasure to defeat that evil. In the case of Ukraine, providing military and humanitarian support can accomplish three things. First, aid may enable Ukraine in stopping aggression. Second, providing assistance sends a strong message to the Kremlin not to escalate against European states that border Russia and by extension Belarus.

The third lesson is that stopping aggression now prevents the United States from being drawn into a wider war that will not only require treasure but American blood.

Weakness breeds contempt. The United States has made a commitment to Ukraine. Our word is a bond and failing to honor it is a breeding ground for aggression. That failure will cause friends and allies to doubt our willingness to help them in their hour of need.

I think you should call Speaker Johnson and have this heart to heart with him, or better yet go meet with him face to face.

This REPO act legislation - it is something Pres. Biden is aware of and would use in his meeting about aid to Ukraine with congressional leaders (including Johnson) this Tues 2/27 ?

I have no doubts that Biden urgently and sincerely wants Ukraine aid to pass. I have grave doubts about Johnson and Trump. At this point I deeply suspect Trump is taking orders from the Kremlin, and Trump is desperate to regain power, grant himself complete immunity, and stay out of jail. And Putin can help him do this again, interfering in our elections, while setting up a soft power control of the US by Russia. Trump is purely transactional so I don't think he would ever help any country because it's "the right thing to do"

The other issue I see is this: if Malcom Nance is correct in his Special Intelligence assessment, " Donald Trump is central to the American wing of the new Axis of Autocrats: Trump – Putin – Iran" . Now that's a huge Ego boost for someone like Trump- suddenly he's a legit part of the terror squad. Trump isn't interested in aid to Israel, either. So I tend to think this issue (with Trump) is more than just "anything that hurts Biden is good for Trump." Trump is chaotic but very vengeful - I suspect Putin retaliates in calculated cold-blooded menace, much like his slow acting poisons.

I hope your Win-Win-Win solution will work and I REALLY hope I'm wrong about the Trump / Putin alliance. I saw Pres. Zelenskyy's short interviews from today because honestly, it's heartbreaking to see Ukraine suffer like this , I feel like America has betrayed them.

As always, a good and crucial analysis that should point Speaker Johnson to the only correct course of action, economically, politically, and humanistically - voting on the pending legislation for aid to Ukraine and elsewhere.

*** Without our military aid, however, more Ukrainians will die. ***

I disagree with this statement. Without the US aid, the Zelensky government will be forced to negotiate a deal with Russia, and fewer Ukrainians will die. Since I am a Ukrainian from Kiev, I frequently call to my Kiev friends to check on the situation on the ground. They do not want to go to the battlefield and die. Zelensky does not risk anything - at the last moment he will fly to London or Miami, but my Kiev friends could not. This is called a "moral hazard" - Zelensky is going to get benefits if things go according to his plan drafted with US and UK specialists, but he does not risk his life if anything goes in a different direction. And by the way, the Zelensky government are not democrats - they have a plan to force Crimean people to switch to Ukrainian language (this is similar to forcing all Californians to switch to Spanish in government papers, medical records and education - clearly not a democratic move).

Was "determinantal" meant to be "detrimental", or am I learning a new word today?
